The Acrylic Code Episode 26: What Annealing Does Not Do, and Why Acrylic Really Turns Yellow

Annealing has nothing to do with yellowing. Episode 26 of The Acrylic Code corrects the most common myth in structural acrylic and explains what actually causes a pool wall to discolor.

Structural acrylic behind every acrylic pool wall, underwater acrylic window, panoramic acrylic pool floor, and cantilevered acrylic pool carries one myth that keeps circulating, and it usually comes from the supplier who caused the problem in the first place.

This episode is about what annealing does not do.

The myth Someone tells me their acrylic pool wall turned yellow, and the supplier told them it was not annealed properly.

That is wrong. Annealing has nothing to do with yellowing. Annealing relieves internal stress. That is its only job. It does not protect color, it does not stabilize the material against sunlight, and it cannot correct a problem that was built into the block before the oven was ever involved.

What actually causes yellowing Yellowing comes from somewhere else entirely, and there are four real causes. UV degradation, the effect of sustained sunlight exposure on a material that was not properly stabilized against it.

Low molecular weight MMA in the raw material. If the monomer the block was cast from was low grade to begin with, no downstream process can fix what the material fundamentally is.

Residual catalyst left in the block, meaning the chemistry was not fully and cleanly resolved during polymerization.

Supplier shortcuts in the casting itself, the cumulative effect of a manufacturer cutting corners on inputs, cycle time, and control.

Every one of these traces back to the material and how it was made, not to the stress-relief cycle that came afterward.

Two different failures, two different causes The clearest way to understand the separation is to look at what each failure looks like on its own.

A perfectly annealed block made from cheap MMA will still yellow. The annealing was done correctly, the stress was relieved, and the block still discolors, because the problem was in the raw material.

A block that skipped annealing can stay crystal clear and crack anyway. The color holds perfectly, and the panel fails structurally, because the locked-in stress had nowhere to go.

Two different failures. Two different causes. Confusing them means chasing the wrong fix, and it usually means a supplier is deflecting attention from the real problem, which is the grade of material they supplied.

Why this matters when you are specifying If a supplier explains discoloration by pointing at annealing, that answer should raise a question rather than settle one. Yellowing is a material and manufacturing story.
